Oilers' Devereaux notches tying goal

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- The Edmonton Oilers came away with a tie against Ottawa, but not happily.

The Oilers were fuming over what they felt was a missed penalty call on a play that led to a Senators goal in Edmonton's 3-3 tie Sunday night with the Senators.

Edmonton defenseman Tom Poti was sent into the boards by Shaun Van Allen, who continued the play to give the Senators a 3-2 lead at 9:51 of the third period.

"There's no place in hockey for a play like that," said Poti. "It's not pretty when something like that happens.

"Basically I feel it was a cheap shot," Poti said. "Then they went down and scored, which made it worse. They definitely have to call that. If I was another couple of inches either way, I could have been in trouble."

Poti was a freshman with the Boston University Terriers the season after that school's Travis Roy suffered a career-ending spinal-cord injury on a check from behind, so he's well aware of the danger.

The goal was Van Allen's first since Oct. 16.

"I've gone a long time without scoring," he said. "When one goes in the back of the net, that's all you think about."

Boyd Devereaux scored at 13:24 of the third period from just outside the crease after winning a faceoff in the Ottawa zone to tie the game at 3. He slipped the puck back to Roman Hamrlik on the draw, and flipped in the rebound Hamrlik's shot.

Jim Dowd and Ethan Moreau also scored for the Oilers, who outshot the Senators 32-24.

Moreau had tied the game at 2 at 3:54 of the third when his backhander slipped past Patrick Lalime.

Dowd gave Edmonton a 1-0 lead as he tallied his first goal of the year at 2:29.

Joe Juneau tied the game at 1 when he scored on a backhander just outside the crease. Wade Redden gave Ottawa a 2-1 with a power-play goal at 9:43 of the first period.
