Forsberg hurt in Colorado's win

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- Peter Forsberg opened the regular season with a shoulder injury and he's ending it with another one.

The Colorado forward hurt his right shoulder and had to be helped off the ice during the Avalanche's 3-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Friday night.

The team said the injury is not considered serious but will be evaluated Saturday in Denver.

Forsberg, who entered the night with 51 points from just 48 games, left with 2:04 left in the second period after being checked heavily into the boards by Flames defenseman Brad Werenka. No penalty was called.

The center favored the shoulder as he came off the ice.

Forsberg, who led the Avalanche in points and assists a year ago, missed the first 23 games this season because of a torn left shoulder muscle picked up in last spring's playoffs.

The result of Friday's game was not significant for either team, and Colorado gave defensemen Ray Bourque and Adam Foote the night off.

Calgary was eliminated from playoff contention Wednesday, and the Avalanche were already locked in as Northwest Division champions and third in the conference.

Colorado closes the regular season Sunday by hosting Detroit.

"It was a different feeling before the game tonight considering every game meant so much over the last 20," said Jerome Iginla, who scored Calgary's goal. "But once we get out there, we want to win and we're going to go right to the end."

Serge Aubin scored his first NHL goal, and Joe Sakic and Milan Hejduk also tallied for Colorado, which won all six games against Calgary this season.

Trailing 1-0 from the second minute of the game, Colorado tied it and then went ahead with a pair of breakaway goals 1:35 apart in the third period. With the Avalanche short-handed, Hejduk intercepted a Phil Housley pass and sent Sakic in alone at 6:27.

Aubin, serving the Colorado penalty, then jumped out of the penalty box, took a pass from Sakic and fired a shot over the shoulder of Flames goaltender Fred Brathwaite, who stopped 33 straight shots before the two breakaways.

"When I got out of the box, I saw Joe had the puck so I tried to give him a good passing lane," Aubin said. "He made an unbelievable pass and I was lucky enough to put the puck in the net."

Aubin was the AHL leader in goals with 40 when he was recalled from the Hershey Bears on March 3.

"The whole Calgary team played really good and showed us that even though they were out of the playoffs, we had to work 100 percent if we wanted to win the game," said Aubin. "It was a good test for us, especially before the playoffs as we want to keep the momentum going."

Marc Denis made his second start in a row in net for the Avalanche and made 35 saves.
