Baxter Bits: Ravens vs. Rams

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Baltimore Ravens make their way to the TWA Dome in St. Louis as they meet the Rams for just the second time ever. The Ravens posted a 37-31 overtime triumph in 1996 at Memorial Stadium in the only previous encounter between these clubs.

Numbers: The Ravens scored 145 points in six wins, 124 points in 10 losses in '98. The Ravens committed 26 turnovers in their last 11 games in '98. In 16 games in '98, the Rams were outscored by the opposition a combined 116-37 in the first quarter. In their last 59 games dating back to '95, the Rams' offense/special teams has given up 22 touchdowns (1 fumbled punt, 3 punt returns, 3 kickoff returns, 1 blocked field goal, 7 interceptions, 7 fumbles) and five safeties.

Things To Look For: Loaded with young talent, the Ravens hope to reach their potential under Brian Billick, although the offensive guru's biggest worry may be QB Scott Mitchell. Dick Vermeil has his own problems at quarterback, but untested QB Kurt Warner is surrounded by plenty of play-makers, including new RB Marshall Faulk and rookie WR Torry Holt. Don't look for a lot of defensive highlights.

Etc.: The Rams own an NFL-worst 45-99 record in the 1990's, and with a loss to the Ravens will become just the second team in league history to lose at least 100 games in a given decade (Buccaneers were 45-106-1 in the 1980s). The Rams are 30-78 vs. NFC teams but 15-21 vs. AFC competition (3-1 in '98). Playing at home doesn't seem to be much of an advantage for the Rams, who are just 2-11 in their last 13 games at the TWA Dome dating back to October of 1997.
