Baxter Bits: Panthers vs. Redskins

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

Panthers make their first appearance at Redskins Stadium looking to break into the win column in this short-lived series.

The Redskins own a perfect 3-0 edge in the standings, posting a 28-25 triumph last season (Week 15) at Ericsson Stadium in the latest encounter between the clubs.

Carolina's only previous road tilt in this series resulted in a 20-17 loss at RFK Stadium in 1995.

Numbers: The Panthers have committed 80 turnovers in their last 35 games (12-23) dating back to '97, totaling 17 turnovers in 12 wins and 63 turnovers in 23 losses. Carolina has amassed 27 takeaways in 12 wins, 29 takeaways in 23 losses dating back to '97. They have allowed 134 points in 12 wins, 637 points in 23 losses dating back to '97. In 34 regular-season games with Carolina (1996, 1998-99), Panthers OLB Kevin Greene has totaled 31.0 sacks (14.5 in '96, 15.0 in '98, 1.5 in '99).

Redskins RB Stephen Davis has rushed for 328 yards and 8 touchdowns in 3 games in 1999 (2 or more touchdowns in each of those games), running for 100-plus yards in 2 of those contests. In his 3 previous seasons (1996-98), Davis rushed for 815 yards and five touchdowns in 42 games and had failed to gain 100 or more yards rushing in any of those contests. After scoring just 93 points in their first 7 games (0-7), the Redskins have scored 338 points in their last 12 contests (8-4) dating back to '98. Since 1993, the Redskins have given up 130 or more yards rushing in 50-of-99 games, 200 or more yards on the ground in 11 of those contests, while limiting the opposition to fewer than 100 yards rushing in just 21 of those 99 games. The Redskins have allowed 120 or more yards rushing in 14 of their last 19 contests dating back to '98.

Things To Look For: Carolina's ground game came alive (sort of) last week against the bumbling Bengals as RB Thsimanga Biakabutuka broke off two long touchdown runs against the lost Bengals. But the Panthers' defense didn't put up much resistance despite the final score, which means slowing down the Redskins' red-hot combo of RB Stephen Davis and QB Brad Johnson is highly unlikely, especially on the road.

Etc.: The Panthers are 12-23 in their last 35 games (1997-99) after finishing 12-4 and winning the NFC West title in 1996. Including playoffs, the Panthers are 32-37 in their 69-game history (1995-99), 17-16 vs. the NFC West and just 15-21 against the rest of the NFL.
