Baxter Bits: Redskins at Colts

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Redskins head to the RCA Dome for the first time since 1994 as these interconfrence foes battle for the fourth time in seven seasons.

While the Colts own a 16-9 advantage in this series that dates back to 1953 (when the Colts were in Baltimore), the Redskins have prevailed in three straight and five of the last six meetings dating back to 1981, including a 31-16 victory at RFK Stadium in 1996 in the last encounter between the teams.

The Redskins are 2-1 lifetime at the RCA Dome dating back to 1984, their last appearance in Indianapolis resulting in a 41-27 victory in 1994.

Numbers: Redskins RB Stephen Davis has rushed for 1,335 yards and 17 touchdowns in 13 games in 1999, running for 100-plus yards in six of those contests. In his three previous seasons (1996-98), Davis rushed for 815 yards and five touchdowns in 42 games and had failed to gain 100 or more yards rushing in any of those contests. In his last 15 starts (2 with Minnesota in 1998, 13 with Washington in 1999), Redskins QB Brad Johnson has thrown for 3,619 yards, 26 touchdowns and just 15 interceptions, with his team scoring a combined 444 points (31, 38, 35, 50, 27, 38, 24, 20, 48, 17, 28, 23, 20, 17 and 28 points) in those contests.

In his last 24 games dating back to '98, Redskins WR Michael Westbrook has caught 98 passes for 1,762 yards and 14 touchdowns, totaling 100 or more yards receiving in eight of those games. In his three previous seasons (1995-97), Westbrook caught 102 passes for 1,586 yards and just five touchdowns in 35 games and totaled 100 or more yards receiving in just two of those contests. After allowing a team-record 61 sacks in 16 games in '98 (3 or more sacks in 13 of those contests), the Redskins have allowed 22 sacks in 13 games in '99, three or more sacks in just three of those 13 contests. The Redskins have allowed eight sacks in eight wins, 14 sacks in five losses in '99. The Redskins have committed 17 turnovers in their last six games (3-3) after committing just seven turnovers in their first seven contests (5-2) in '99. They have allowed 142 points in eight wins, 181 points in five losses in '99. RB Skip Hicks has scored 10 touchdowns in his last 22 games dating back to '98.

After throwing just three touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in his first four games, Colts QB Peyton Manning has thrown 47 TD passes and 31 interceptions in his last 25 contests dating back to '98, throwing two or more touchdown passes in 15 of his last 24 games. However, Manning has thrown two or more interceptions in 10 of his last 22 contests. Manning has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 26 straight games dating back to '98. In his last eight games, Colts RB Edgerrin James has rushed for 950 yards and seven touchdowns (running for 100 or more yards in 7 of those contests), plus caught 41 passes for 416 yards and three touchdowns. James has rushed for 100 or more yards in 9-of-13 contests in '99. After allowing an AFC-high 62 sacks in 16 games in 1997, the Colts have allowed just 35 sacks in their last 29 games dating back to '98. After allowing 11 sacks in their first four games in 1998, the Colts have allowed just 24 sacks in their last 25 contests, giving up zero sacks in 12 of those 25 contests. The Colts have allowed 188 points in 11 wins, 65 points in two losses in '99.

Things to look for: With a pair of power runners and very capable passing attacks, this figures to be a big-time shoot out in the RCA Dome, especially when you consider that neither the Redskins' nor Colts' run defenses really scare anyone. And while many are expecting Norv Turner's team to get taught another lesson, don't be surprised if the very desperate 'Skins put an end Indianapolis' winning ways.

Etc.: The Colts are in the playoffs for the first time since 1996 and are 11-2, their most victories in a season since 1976, when the then-Baltimore Colts finished 11-3 and won the AFC East under since-departed head coach Ted Marchibroda (his first stint with the team). The Colts have won nine straight games in the same season for the first time since 1975, when the then-Baltimore Colts won their final nine games enroute to a 10-4 season and won the AFC East under Marchibroda. The Redskins are 9-15 vs. AFC teams since 1993 (1-1 in '99). The Colts are just 11-20 vs. NFC teams dating back to 1991, but 3-0 in '99. The Colts have won nine straight games. The Colts have won five straight home games. They are 11-2 in 1999, this after finishing a combined 6-26 in 1997-98. Redskins WR Irving Fryar (12,124) needs 22 yards to tie Charlie Joiner (12,146) for 7th place on the NFL's all-time receiving yardage list.
