Baxter Bits: Bills at Cardinals

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Bills head to Sun Devil Stadium for the first time ever as they face the Cardinals for just the seventh time and the first time since 1990.

While the teams have split their previous six battles, the Bills have prevailed in the last two meetings, including a 45-14 victory at Orchard Park in 1990 in the last meeting between the clubs.

The Bills are 1-2 lifetime as visitors in this series (all at St. Louis), their last road tilt in this setting resulting in a 37-7 loss at Busch Stadium in 1984

Numbers: The Bills have committed eight turnovers and allowed nine sacks in eight wins while committing 14 turnovers and allowing 15 sacks in five losses in '99. The Bills have allowed 79 points in eight wins, 113 points in five losses in '99. They have limited the opposition to fewer than 100 yards rushing in six straight games. The Bills have been limited to 17 or fewer points and fewer than 100 yards rushing in three straight games.

Including playoffs, the Cardinals have forced 44 turnovers in 16 wins, but have just 23 takeaways in 15 losses dating back to '98. QB Jake Plummer has thrown 19 touchdown passes (plus rushed for 4 scores) and 31 interceptions in his last 20 games (10-9 as starter) dating back to '98 (including playoffs), this after throwing just six TD passes and 11 interceptions (plus rushed for 1 score) in his first seven games (3-4) in '98. The Cardinals have scored 94 points in their last five games (4-1), this after scoring just 92 points in their first eight contests (2-6) in '99. They have scored 130 points in six wins, 56 points in seven losses in '99. The Cardinals have been outscored a combined 90-19 in the first quarter in 13 games in '99. They have forced two or more turnovers in three straight games. They have been limited to fewer than 100 yards rushing in three straight games.

Things to look for: Both the Bills and Cardinals' offenses were missing in action last week, and things might not be much better this Sunday as two of the league's most mobile quarterbacks (Doug Flutie and Jake Plummer) figure to be on the run. But the difference could be Buffalo's dormant running game, which should awaken against an Arizona defensive front that has been undermanned all season.

Etc.: The Bills are 28-11 vs. NFC competition during the regular season since 1990 (2-1 in '99), however they're 0-4 in Super Bowl competition. They are 13-2 vs. the NFC East since 1990 in the regular season, 0-4 in Super Bowls. The Cardinals are just 3-16 vs. AFC teams dating back to 1995 (0-3 in '99). Bills WR Andre Reed (13,030) needs 59 yards to tie Steve Largent (13,089) for 4th place on the NFL's all-time receiving yardage list. Reed (933) needs seven catches to tie Art Monk (940) for 2nd place on the NFL's all-time receptions list. Reed (86) needs two touchdown catches to tie Don Maynard (88) for 5th place on the NFL's all-time touchdown receptions list. Reed (87) needs one touchdown to tie Don Maynard (88) for 19th place on the NFL's all-time touchdowns scored list.

Bills RB Thurman Thomas (87) needs one touchdown to tie Don Maynard (88) for 19th place on the NFL's all-time touchdowns scored list. PK Steve Christie (242) needs one field goal to tie Jim Breech (243) for 18th place on the NFL's all-time field goals list.
