'I can't wait for it to be over'

By Ashley Lelie with Wayne Drehs
Special to ESPN.com

For the past two months, I couldn't wait for the combine to get here. But now that it's less than 48 hours away, I can't wait for it to be over.

Each day, I'm getting more and more nervous. I want to go to Indianapolis, meet some coaches and general managers, run my blistering 40-yard dash and be done with it.

Making the Leap
ESPN.com is following wide receiver Ashley Lelie on his journey from the University of Hawaii to the NFL. Lelie is writing a weekly diary, and we will file regular reports on the steps a prospect takes in preparation for the NFL draft on April 20.

Send in your questions and Lelie will answer a few every week.

  • How I feel in these last few days before the combine is difficult to explain. It's a mix of being both excited and nervous. The past few nights, I haven't slept that well, as I lay in bed and let my mind wander about all that's ahead of me. When I do get some sleep, I even dream about the combine, though I can't for the life of me remember what the dreams are about.

Why all the nerves? The fear of the unknown, I guess. I've been prepped for weeks on what's going to happen and what I should expect, but until I'm there and things are underway, I'm going to be a little uneasy.

In the meantime, I've been working on my starts for the 40-yard dash and practicing each of the events I'll be tested on. In my free time, I've been finishing up autographing 3,000 football cards, and let me tell you, it's a whole lot harder than I thought it would be. I should have figured that 3,000 signatures was a lot, but I didn't. And it's a pain because you can't watch TV or anything. You truly have to concentrate so you're not too messy and the kids can actually read what you've signed. And of course, my arm cramps up, and I start messing up. That's why they give you 3,200 cards, so you can make a mistake on 200.

My plans for this weekend are pretty set already. I arrive in Indianapolis on Friday morning and will spend most of the day going through physicals for many of the teams. I'm also going to do the Cybex test, which measures the strength ratio between your thigh and hamstring. We did the test a couple times in college, and it really drains you.

On Saturday, I'll spend most of the time meeting with representatives from NFL teams. Already, I've been contacted by the Chiefs and the Panthers, who wanted to set up specific appointments to meet with me.

Sunday, well that's the big day. That's the day I'll do all the major physical tests, including the 40-yard dash. For the 40, my goal is to just run as fast as I can. I ran a 4.26 in training last week, but if I can run something around a 4.4 at the combine, I'd be happy.

As for running a sub-4.3 at the combine, which only three guys (Deion Sanders, Rod Woodson and Brett Perriman) have ever done, it would be incredible. But a lot of things have to happen for me to run a sub-4.3 and be at my best.

For one, I can't worry about anybody else's time. I don't want to hear that somebody ran a 4.39 and then try to beat that. I'm already competitive enough. So I'm going to ignore all the times and just worry about me. I'm only racing myself.

The other key is to relax. When your mind is all tense, your body gets tense, and then it's a whole lot more difficult to perform. So I just have to go in there and relax. It's all about the right state of mind. I have to know that even though everyone will be there watching, and the pressure will be on, running a bad time would not be the end of the world. I still have my pro workout days to impress some teams.

The other key is to make sure I'm 100-percent healthy. My hamstrings have been sore on and off since I've been here, so I've been undergoing massages the last couple days to help ease the soreness. It isn't a big deal, and I've been running sub-4.3 times with the soreness, but I'd like to be 100 percent when I run.

After the combine, it's back to Hawaii for a couple weeks to see my friends and my teammates. I haven't been back there since the middle of January, and I'm eager to get back to the great weather. I'm going to continue to train on my own, but I also plan on taking a little bit of a break.
