GREELEY, Colo. (AP) _ Cornerback Tory James is seeking plenty of advice from his Denver Broncos teammates at training camp this year, and he says all that information has improved his performance on the field.
Being a cornerback by trade, the obvious influences on his life have been cornerbacks. James cited Denver's Dale Carter and Ray Crockett as two of his best sources of advice and inspiration. "Dale is so confident in his ability that he feels he can't be beaten on any play," James said. "I picked that up from him, to be confident and play hard every play and not to relax no matter who you are going up against." James and Carter have been seen between plays carrying on animated discussions. "We talk here and there, throughout practice," James said of Carter, who is not known to interact with teammates. "He motivates me, I motivate him and it is going pretty good." James said he turns to Crockett for more knowledge of the game. "Ray knows the game probably as well as anybody on our defense," James said. "I go to him to get some knowledge on formations and the way a receiver runs routes." Safety Tyrone Braxton provides a steadying influence. "Tyrone keeps my spirits up, talking and joking around," James said. "Everybody in the secondary has something different that I am picking up on and learning." Much of his motivation comes from within, and that proved especially useful during a long, tenuous rehabilitation from surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in his right knee. The injury occurred in first quarter of Denver's first preseason game in 1997 and forced him to miss the entire season. "I thought my career was over. I didn't know where to go," he said. "The way that I made it was turning to the Lord. I didn't need anything else after that." James' determination and eagerness haven't gone unnoticed by the Broncos coaching staff. "Don't let him fool you, he is a tenacious guy too and we don't have guys that work harder than him," secondary coach Ed Donatell said. "And it has taken him the full boat to get back." The work has yielded a cornerback who comes up with an interception or a spectacular play nearly every day at training camp. He made the defensive play of the game against San Diego last Saturday, when he returned a third quarter interception 58 yards for a touchdown. "Tory is instinctive, but we knew that two years ago," Donatell said. "He just needed to get healthy and running again." And the combination of his return to health and the influence of his teammates has had other impacts. "I am feeling good about myself and am at peace with everything," James said. "Right now I don't think there is anything out there I can't do." |
