Whispers from around the NFL

Pro Football Weekly

Jerry Rice
Rice

  • The grapevine gossip is that as many as four teams for sure -- the Raiders, Redskins, Ravens and Jets -- will seriously consider trying to add 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice to their roster.

  • The Giants have every intention of re-signing running back Tiki Barber and cornerback Jason Sehorn, both of whom are slated to become unrestricted free agents in February.

  • Wide receiver Albert Connell, who found himself in the coaches' doghouse before Week 16's game, believes he will not be back in Washington next season. Connell will be an unrestricted free agent next season. Interim head coach Terry Robiskie felt the receiver made several mental mistakes against the Cowboys and isn't productive enough.

  • Reports out of Green Bay had James "Bus" Cook, the agent for quarterback Brett Favre, proposing a seven-year contract extension worth between $95 million and $100 million with a signing bonus of $20 million. The deal would reduce Favre's salary-cap number for next season and help the Packers alleviate their nearly $10 million salary-cap overrun.

  • Chargers veteran strong safety Rodney Harrison has chastised several teammates lately who were laughing and joking in the locker room after recent losses. The first time it happened, Harrison addressed the team directly in the locker room, but the second time, he chose to use the media as his outlet for frustration.

    Marco Coleman
    Coleman

  • Redskins defensive end Marco Coleman has reached at least $1.6 million in incentives this season. Part of the money comes from earning a Pro Bowl berth. However, Coleman isn't all that impressed with the honor. He's truly disturbed at how the season has gone awry in Washington. Defensive end Bruce Smith has earned $250,000 in incentive money, and fullback Larry Centers has earned a $250,000 bonus. All of this money -- and possibly more if further incentives are met in the final week of the regular season -- will count against next season's salary cap.

  • Former Redskins head coach Norv Turner told WMAQ-TV in Chicago that if the Bears showed an interest, he would consider their offensive coordinator position for next season.

  • Titans fullback Lorenzo Neal was disappointed with the criteria used to select the AFC's starting fullback in the Pro Bowl. Neal didn't blast the selection, but he felt Jets fullback Richie Anderson was chosen because of his reception total more so than his blocking ability, which Neal believes is the true barometer of a fullback's play.

  • After quarterback Jay Fiedler made several bad decisions while playing through a sore non-throwing shoulder in Week 15, Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt won't trust Fiedler as much in the future when it comes to the quarterback playing with pain.

    Mike Tomczak
    Tomczak

  • The reason there has been little talk of the Lions missing veteran backup quarterback Mike Tomczak, who's been on injured reserve the entire season, is because he wasn't playing well in training camp. The Lions have stuck with quarterback Charlie Batch, despite his recent struggles and sore ribs.

  • We hear the following Jets unrestricted free agents are good bets not to be back with the team -- linebacker Bryan Cox, wide receiver Dedric Ward, tight end Fred Baxter and nose tackle Jason Ferguson.

  • Despite what many are calling an upgrade at the Broncos' cornerback position while he was out, Ray Crockett will resume the starting role over the impressive Jimmy Spencer when Crockett returns this week from a hamstring pull.

  • Broncos running back Mike Anderson has done a much better job of running lower and picking up blitzes as the season has worn on.

  • According to Colts head coach Jim Mora, wide receiver Terrence Wilkins is running more aggressively on returns and routes and is doing a much better job of blocking than he was earlier this season.

  • Patriots wide receiver Tony Simmons followed up a pep talk by head coach Bill Belichick last week with a poor practice session in which he generally looked uninterested, running bad routes and dropping passes. The following day he was banned from practice, and his practice gear had been cleared out of his locker, although word is he did attend a team meeting.

  • The Bengals are very excited about the progress and productivity they've seen from rookie wide receiver Danny Farmer, whom they picked up after he was cut by the Steelers in the preseason.
