The 49ers seem to have hit the draft jackpot for the second year in a row.
| | Kevan Barlow torched the Jets defense for 83 yards on only nine carries. |
The 2000 draft produced five players who started on defense in Monday night's victory over the Jets -- linebackers Julian Peterson and Jeff Ulbrich, cornerbacks Ahmed Plummer and Jason Webster and defensive end John Engelberger.
This year's haul may be just as fruitful. It's still early in the season, but running back Kevan Barlow and defensive end Andre Carter look like the real deal. Carter has been in the starting lineup from day one, while Barlow has split time with starting running back Garrison Hearst. Both played a large part in the outcome of Monday's game.
Barlow teamed with Hearst to pile up 233 yards rushing on the Jets. The third-round pick from Pittsburgh carried the ball nine times for 83 yards (9.2 per carry) and caught two passes. In three games, Barlow has 141 yards rushing on 27 carries.
For Carter, Monday night's game was extra special. The first-round pick from Cal got his first sack in front of his dad, Rubin Carter, the Jets' defensive-line coach.
"What better than to have (my first sack) in New York, against my dad, on Monday Night Football?" Carter told The Sacramento Bee. "That's just the beginning. Now the question is, will I continue to make plays like that?"
Each Tuesday from now until the end of the regular season, ESPN.com will hand out its report card on how the new kids are doing. Here's an update on some of the league's most intriguing efforts by rookies in Week 3:
PLAYER, STATS |
THE SKINNY |
Adam Archuleta, SS, Rams vs. Dolphins 3 tackles |
Coach Mike Martz praised the play of Archuleta in the Rams convincing victory over the Dolphins. "He made a couple of huge plays," Martz told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "One ... was at about the 20-yard line. It was not a blitz, but he read it, got through, took on a lead blocker and tackled the ball carrier for about a 3- or 4-yard loss."
|
Matt Light, OT, Patriots vs. Colts |
Light seems to have found a spot as the Patriots starting left tackle. The second-round pick from Purdue had a strong game against the Colts, as did the Patriots. The Patriots only allowed one sack and had 177 yards rushing. "Matt did good," quarterback Tom Brady told The Boston Globe. "I was protected well all day long." However, coach Bill Belichick cautioned against praising Light too much. "Let's not put the statue up there yet," Belichick told the paper. "I think he's done some good things. I think there are some other things that aren't all that great. He's shown some improvement in the last three weeks."
|
Dan Morgan, LB, Panthers vs. Packers 3 tackles |
The Panthers' first-round pick broke his left tibia in the second quarter of the Panthers loss to the Packers. The turf at Ericsson Stadium was in horrible condition, although it's not clear if that contributed to Morgan's injury. "I don't know. The field was bad ... But I don't know if it was the field or not," Morgan told the Charlotte Observer. "It could have happened if we were on turf. I can't really say. I was just moving too fast. I really couldn't tell you if the turf slipped out from underneath me."
|
Justin Smith, DE, Bengals at Chargers 3 tackles 1 sack |
In just his second NFL game, Smith recorded his first sack. The No. 4 overall pick from Missouri had a 13-yard sack of Doug Flutie in the second quarter. However, Smith wasn't in the mood to celebrate after the game. "It's not that big a deal, really," Smith told the Cincinnati Post. "We didn't get the win. We've just got to get back to the drawing board."
|
LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, Chargers vs. Bengals 21 att., 107 yds., 3 TDs |
It looks like there is a new LT in the NFL. Tomlinson continues to impress in his rookie season. The former TCU star scored touchdowns on three straight second-half possessions as the Chargers rolled past the Bengals 28-14. Tomlinson, the No. 5 pick in the draft, has 310 yards and five rushing touchdowns, both tops in the AFC, in three games. "He's pretty darn good," said Doug Flutie. "It's so much fun to watch him run."
|
Gerard Warren, DT, Browns at Jaguars 1 tackle |
The No. 2 overall pick in the draft had a big impact on the Jaguars victory over the Browns, and it could cost him a lot of money. Warren delivered a helmet-to-helmet hit that knocked Jags quarterback Mark Brunell out of Sunday's game. "I think it was a cheap shot," said Brunell, who suffered a concussion on the hit. "After seeing it, there's no question." Warren likely won't get suspended, but he can expect a pretty hefty fine from the NFL.
|
Chris Weinke, QB, Panthers vs. Falcons 27-of-41, 276 yds. 1 att., 5 yds., 1 TD |
Weinke had a decent day statistically, but he wasn't able to keep the Panthers in the game in the second half, when the Packers scored 22 straight points. "We're playing in our first home game. We do some very good things early in the game and we get the crowd behind us," Weinke told the Charlotte Observer. "We had the momentum going into halftime with a 7-6 lead and before you know it's 21-7. The one thing you want to do as an offense is respond. After they score those two touchdowns, you want to do something very positive and we weren't able to do that." |
