Patton takes Boselli's spot; Schwartz out
Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars signed former Washington Redskins tackle Joe Patton on Wednesday to replace Tony Boselli, who is out for the season with a torn knee ligament.

The Jaguars also gave up on veteran linebacker Bryan Schwartz, placing him on injured reserve. To replace Schwartz, they signed linebacker Chester Burnett, a second-year pro, off their practice squad.

Patton played in 61 games for the Redskins between 1994 and 1998. A left tackle, he was released before the season when Washington coach Norv Turner questioned his everyday commitment after Patton signed a five-year, $12.5 million contract in 1998.

Schwartz was drafted in 1995 and led the team with 161 tackles his rookie year. But he was never the same after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in 1996.

Before this season, the Jaguars signed him to a one-year, $400,000 contract that Schwartz viewed as a one-time chance to prove himself again and get his career back on track.

It didn't work out. He lost the starting job in training camp, then had hamstring injuries. He finished the season with 10 tackles in limited action on defense and special teams.

The Jaguars also signed receiver James Battle to take Burnett's spot on the practice squad.
