Saturday, January 13 Inside the Playbook: Vikings at Giants
The way the Giants run the football, this is a good go-to play. Kerry Collins' mechanics have become much better in regard to ball fakes and the defense has to respect Tiki Barber's ability. Minnesota free safety Orlando Thomas is not playing so the Giants will want to test his replacement Tyrone Carter and this is a perfect play to do that.
The fake to Barber is to hold the inside backers so they don't get depth into the passing lane. If they don't go for the fake Collins will have to check the ball down to Barber, which isn't tragic and should gain five to eight yards. The quarterback reads from the top down. There is a post route over the top to clear out the free safety. If the free safety squats on the crossing route, the post should be open for a quick touchdown. If the FS backs off to cover the deep man, the next read is the linebacker. If the play-action worked, Toomer should be open on the deep cross. If the linebacker read the play-action and is too deep, Barber will be open to dump the ball off to. One of the three routes will be open. Collins must let the defense dictate where he throws the ball.
