About the play: This is a staple play in Kevin Gilbride's offense, and it will be a big part of the Steelers' attack.

The great part of this route is even after the ball is snapped, there are four options for the wide receiver and QB. This play can be a game breaker (Warren Moon ran this to perfection in Houston when Gilbride was his offensive coordinator).

Kordell Stewart and the X receiver must be on the same page, because there are four options here:

  1. If the cornerback is squared up and playing off, then the receiver will make the decision during his route whether to go to the post or run a 10- or 12-yard out cut. Kordell must see the corners positions.

  2. If the cornerback is inside and off, the receiver will run the out cut.

  3. If the cornerback is outside and off, the receiver will run a post route.

  4. If the cornerback is pressed, the receiver will run a go route.

All this reading must happen in a very short time. This play can give the Steelers big plays because the defense can't be right unless Kordell sees the cornerback coverage different than the receiver. If Stewart and his receiver are on the wrong page, it can embarrass the offense and result in a lot of miscommunication.

When to expect the play: This play is run on any down and distance and anywhere on the field. The Steelers would love man coverage on the X receiver (often Hines Ward or Troy Edwards, but all the receivers will run this).

Keys to the play: The quarterback and receiver must see the defensive alignment exactly the same

Critical player: The quarterback. His timing must be perfect off the five-step drop.

Defense's keys: Defensively, you hope you are in a two-deep zone to prevent the receiver from making decisions on all his options.
