Parcells oversees Dallas veterans for first time

ESPN.com news services

Dallas Cowboys: Bill Parcells took the field Monday in his first practice with the Cowboys veterans, the first of eight over the next six days.

Wearing a navy blue fisherman's hat and a white T-shirt, he ambled around the fields during the sweltering afternoon session, when the temperature reached into the 90s.

Under the trained eye of Parcells, players exhibited pep that wasn't often present during previous training camps under fired coach Dave Campo, jogging from drill to drill and constantly encouraging each other during the two-hour practice.

It was just the kind of intensity Parcells promised the Cowboys -- 5-11 in each of the last three seasons -- would have when he was hired nearly five months ago.

"He knows everything about us,'' said safety Darren Woodson, at 34 now the oldest Cowboy on the roster since Emmitt Smith was released in the offseason. "He's a player's coach -- he wants to be in the mix.''

Parcells said the team's quarterback race is essentially between Chad Hutchinson and Quincy Carter, with both players expected to take an equal number of snaps during the camp.

"I'm just going to let these two guys fight it out,'' Parcells said. "I don't know, we just might play two guys the whole preseason.''

Both Hutchinson and Carter got roughly the same amount of plays during the first practice. Third-stringer Clint Stoerner got the rest of the snaps.

Denver Broncos: The Broncos signed safety Bobby Walker and cornerback Brandon Williams on Monday.

The rookie free agents worked out at the team's mini-camp earlier this month. Terms were not disclosed.

Walker played two seasons at Kansas State where he made 33 tackles in 16 games. He spent his first two collegiate years at Trinity Valley College in Texas, where he was a junior college All-American.

Williams was a four-year letterman at Michigan, where he played in 45 career games and made six starts at cornerback. He made 74 tackles, including 61 solo, and made two interceptions for 28 yards.

San Francisco 49ers: The 49ers will return to Kezar Stadium for the first time in 32 years for an open workout during training camp in August.

The 49ers also will play a mock game at San Jose State, giving their fans at least a few good looks at the team during an otherwise inaccessible training camp.

The 49ers are moving their camp from Stockton, where they spent the past five seasons, back to their training complex in Santa Clara, where the team can't accommodate the general public.

"It was imperative that we find ways to have our fans watch us practice during training camp,'' 49ers general manager Terry Donahue said Monday. "Since they can't come to us, we decided we would bring the practices to them.''

Kezar, a charmingly antiquated stadium in Golden Gate Park, was the 49ers' home from 1946-70. The 49ers haven't played at Kezar since Jan. 3, 1971, when they lost the NFC championship game to Dallas.

The 49ers will work out under Kezar's lights on Aug. 25. The team plans to invite several players from the franchise's early years, and many of the current players will ride trolley cars through the city beforehand.
