CASTLE ROCK, Colo. -- Prosecutors still are unsure if they
will proceed with a trial on felony drug charges against Denver
Broncos linebacker Bill Romanowski and his wife.
Romanowski's trial is scheduled to begin in Douglas County
District Court on Tuesday. District Attorney Jim Peters is still
reviewing documents in the case and has not decided whether to take
the case to trial despite reports to the contrary, spokesman
Michael Knight said.
Prosecutors were prepared for a trial until a judge ruled last
month that statements the Romanowskis made to investigators could
not be used as evidence during their trial.
Peters told prosecutors last week to prepare for trial without
the Romanowskis' statements, Knight said.
"But that happens all the time. The prosecutors prepare for
trial but you never know what might happen until the trial
begins," Knight said. "We're set for trial. We're preparing for
trial. Will it go? We probably won't know until then."
Bill Romanowski is charged with illegally obtaining and
possessing the prescription diet drug phentermine, an appetite
suppressant that also stimulates the central nervous system.
Julie Romanowski is accused of illegally obtaining the drug for
her husband. Her trial is scheduled Aug. 14.
The statements barred from use in the trial allegedly contained
admissions from the Romanowskis that they obtained Phentermine diet
pills through prescriptions written for other people.
