Hoping to bring some respectability to the placement game, the Jacksonville Jaguars on Wednesday signed free agent kicker Tim Seder, just one day after releasing inconsistent rookie Hayden Epstein. The addition of Seder was not surprising, since the former Dallas Cowboys kicker was the most experienced of six candidates who auditioned Tuesday for Jacksonville coaches and team officials, and was rumored to have posted the best workout of the bunch. Contract details were not immediately available. "The goal has been to get another chance and that's what this represents for me," Seder said on Tuesday evening. "It's a good organization, a team with a playoff shot, good coaches. I feel like I have some things to prove and feel like I can help these guys win some games." During his two-season Dallas tenure, Seder, 28, converted 36 of 50 field goal tries and all 39 of his extra point attempts. He was released this summer when the Cowboys decided to keep rookie Billy Cundiff instead. Over the past month, Seder has worked out for several teams, and the consensus was that he was the top kicker available. The Jaguars selected Epstein in the seventh round of the draft and the former University of Michigan star was essentially handed the job once held down by Mike Hollis, who departed in free agency. But even in camp Epstein had some problems and his inconsistency continued into the season. Epstein converted just five of nine field goal tries, none of longer than 39 yards, and missed all three attempts from 40 yards or more. On Sunday, the Jaguars eschewed potential field goal tries of 29, 42 and 48 yards because coach Tom Coughlin had seemingly lost confidence in his young kicker. Coughlin allowed after the game, then reiterated on Monday, that a change would have to be made. Len Pasquarelli is a senior writer for ESPN.com. |
