BALTIMORE (AP) _ The Baltimore Ravens couldn't have picked a better way to wrap up their home debut under first-year coach Brian Billick.

Billy Davis caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from Stoney Case with 10 seconds left Saturday night, giving unbeaten Baltimore a stunning 28-24 preseason victory over the Carolina Panthers.

Case, the Ravens' third-string quarterback, went 6-for-6 for 77 yards during the final drive. His TD pass to Davis set off a wild celebration among those left in the crowd of 66,247, many of whom are looking for big things after enduring three straight losing seasons under former coach Ted Marchibroda.

The Panthers put a scare into the crowd on the final play _ Steve Bono threw a 51-yard pass to Donald Hayes, who was tackled on the Baltimore 7 as time expired.

Bono, 37, went 4-for-4 for 45 yards in a 63-yard drive that put the Panthers up 17-16 with 9:25 left. Carolina's Eric England then returned a fumble by Case 58 yards for a touchdown for a 24-16 lead.

A 2-yard TD run by Jay Graham made it 24-22 with 3:31 left.

Steve Beuerlein didn't hurt his bid to secure the Panthers' starting quarterback job by going 8-for-9 for 93 yards, although he couldn't produce any points in one quarter of work. Backup Jeff Lewis completed his first five passes but went 1-for-8 in the third quarter.

Carolina (1-2) fumbled five times, losing one.

The Ravens averted a potentially damaging turnover in the third quarter when a challenge reversed a fumble by tight end Lovett Purnell at the Baltimore 37. The replay determined that Purnell's knee touched the ground before he lost the ball.

Later in the period, Baltimore backup quarterback Tony Banks completed two of three passes in a 33-yard drive that produced a field goal by Matt Stover and a 13-10 lead.

Stover, battling for his job with Scott Bentley, added another 39-yarder with 13:14 remaining.

The Ravens couldn't have started in more horrid fashion. After Corey Harris muffed the opening kickoff and was tackled at the 5, Priest Holmes lost a fumble that Carolina's Doug Evans returned 21 yards for a score.

Baltimore tied it on its next possession when Scott Mitchell took a lateral from Holmes and hit a wide open Qadry Ismail on the flea-flicker for a 49-yard touchdown.

Later in the first quarter, the Panthers wasted a 42-yard completion from Beuerlein to Rae Carruth when Muhsin Muhammad fumbled at the Baltimore 4 after catching a short pass.

Mitchell went 16-for-29 for 161 yards in one half of work.

ESPN reported that Baltimore defensive end Michael McCrary left the team over a contract dispute, but Ravens spokesman Kevin Byrne said neither McCrary nor his agent informed the team of that decision.

McCrary, not scheduled to play Saturday because of a knee injury, still has one year left on his contract and is seeking an extension.
