Sweetest homes in women's hoops

By Beth Mowins

Playing at home on your own court is a breeze. You've got familiar faces in the stands, your band and student body to cheer you on, not to mention your own fight song blaring through the speakers.

That's why they call it "homecourt advantage."

But imagine standing at midcourt of Thompson Boling-Arena, home of the Tennessee Lady Vols. That's right, more than 20,000 orange-clad fans belting out Rocky Top -- "Rocky Top, you'll always be home sweet home to me ... Good ol' Rocky Top, Rocky Top Tennesseee" -- at the top of their lungs.

Talk about your Orange Crush. Could make for quite a hostile environment ... and there seems to be quite a few of them around the country these days.

Here's a look at the five toughest places to play a road game in women's college basketball:

Gampel Pavilion (Storrs, Conn.)
Home of the: Connecticut Huskies. Capacity: 10,027.
Over/under: UConn was 14-1 at home in 1998-99.
Beth says: Beware of the Dog ... and Beware of the rabid Connecticut fans who make no bones about cheering loudly as the Huskies pound opponents into submission.

Thompson Boling-Arena (Knoxville, Tenn.)
Home of the: Tennessee Lady Vols. Capacity: 24,535.
Over/under: The Lady Vols were 15-0 at home in 1998-99.
Beth says: Arena has 20,000-plus capacity, and the full house has had plenty to get excited about in the past and should expect the hits to keep on coming for Tennessee. Get ready to hear a lot of "Rocky Top" and see a lot of orange.

Thomas Assembly Center (Ruston, La.)
Home of the: Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters. Capacity: 8,000.
Over/under: The Lady Techsters were 12-1 at home in 1998-99.
Beth says: Most opponents who visit Louisiana Tech can start the bus at halftime and get ready to head home. Southern hospitality stops for 40 minutes when the Techsters are on the court.

Mackey Arena (West Lafayette, Ind.)
Home of the: Purdue Boilermakers. Capacity: 14,123.
Over/under: The Boilermakers were 13-0 at home in 1998-99.
Beth says: A circular pit with fans close to the court who have a penchant for making noise from start to finish. Homegrown talent and a blue-collar work ethic add to the atmosphere of this Midwestern madhouse.

Hammon Student Center (Springfield, Mo.)
Home of the: Southwest Missouri State Lady Bears. Capacity: 8,858.
Over/under: The Lady Bears were 13-2 at home in 1998-99.
Beth says: Center isn't easy to get to ... and even harder to get out of with a win when All-American Jackie Stiles gets the Southwest Missouri State faithful all riled up.
