LUBBOCK, Texas A five-year, $4.5 million deal for Bobby
Knight as the new men's basketball coach at Texas Tech means a
likely pay boost for women's coach Marsha Sharp.
Sharp, Tech's coach since 1982, earns $200,000 in base salary
and $200,000 in guaranteed outcome income, which was on par with
what Knight's predecessor James Dickey got.
"We'll be taking care of (Sharp's contract)," athletic
director Gerald Myers said Friday.
"Marsha Sharp has done a fantastic job. She's been a coach we
all can appreciate. We're going to show our appreciation. We'll be
looking at her package. Definitely, we'll be taking a look at
that," Myers told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal on Friday.
Knight, whose hiring was announced to 7,500 fans at United
Spirit Arena late Friday afternoon, will make $250,000 in base pay,
$150,000 in deferred annual income and $500,000 in guaranteed
outside income through May 2006. Sharp is under contract through
April 2005.
Her teams have routinely drawn more fans to games than the men's
teams. They also have been more successful recently, including
eight conference championships in the past 10 years.
Myers said Tech likely will re-evaluate her contract this spring
after her team's appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Texas Tech was
playing Purdue Saturday afternoon in the Mideast Regional
semifinals in Birmingham, Ala. Send this story to a friend | Most sent stories
