Coach's Edge: Sweet 16 playbooks

West Region: Good Knights

In January, no one would have ever guessed North Carolina would be back in the Sweet 16. But the return of Nikki Teasley sparked a sense of urgency in the Tar Heels. But Andy Landers' Lady Bulldogs should send North Carolina packing as they cruise through the bracket with the Miller twins, Deana Nolan and a talented balanced cast of scorers.

Deanna Jackson and UAB have been the surprise of the tournament with impressive victories over host-school Oregon and SEC Tournament runner-up Mississippi State. But, its nearing midnight in the West, and Cinderella might have to turn in her glass slippers when the Blazers meet the battle-tested Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers can put an absolute stranglehold on opponents with its suffocating defense, but its offense has struggled at times this season. However, Rutgers can hang numbers on the board when it uses its defense to create offense and executes in its half-court sets. This play sets up one of the top scorers in the Big East, 5-foot-10 Shawnetta Stewart, but has a secondary option to the get ball to Tammy Sutton-Brown on the block.

ANIMATE THIS PLAY DIAGRAM WITH SHOCKWAVE
(A) Junior point guard Tasha Pointer (43) dribbles to Stewart's (34) side of the court to isolate Stewart on the block.

(B) If it's not there right away, Pointer reverses to Karlita Washington (22), who looks for Stewart off the double screen. Stewart can shoot or drive.

(C) Sutton-Brown (55) is powerful on the block, so if Stewart doesn't have the shot, she passes to Davalyn Cunningham (44) who goes high-low to Sutton-Brown.
