Cook's 23 points lead Longhorn rout

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Texas was in search of another measuring stick after getting routed by Purdue earlier this season.
Record-wise, the Longhorns (unranked ESPN/USA Today, No. 25 AP) were off to their best
start since 1989-90 and doing it without a dominating scorer. The Oregon Ducks (No. 12 ESPN/USA Today, No. 10 AP), with their physical lineup,
would be a good test.
Texas easily measured up.
Tracy Cook scored 23 points Saturday night as the Longhorns
(9-1) ran around the bigger Ducks for an 82-58 victory.
"We work every day to get recognition that we're one of the
best teams in the country," said Cook, the first Longhorn to score
20 points in a game this season.
"Beating a top 10 team by 25 -- it seemed like 40 -- felt
great," Cook said. "But we have to come down to earth tomorrow, I
guess."
Texas' tallest player at 6-foot-2, Cook was 9-of-12 from the
floor, often stepping out for short jumpers over the Ducks' larger
post players, to pace the Longhorns' 51 percent shooting effort.
She didn't do it alone. Texas scored 30 points off Oregon turnovers and took advantage of the foul trouble that hampered the Ducks' bigger lineup all game.
Angelina Wolvert (6-3), Brianne Meharry (6-1) and Jenny Mowe (6-5) all fouled out and Texas went 22-of-25 from the line. Wolvert led Oregon (4-1) with 17 points.
Those three came in shooting a combined 62 percent from the
floor, but were just 11-of-27 against Texas. Texas outscored Oregon
in paint 38-24.
"You preach all the time quickness beats height, but I had my
doubts," Texas coach Jody Conradt said. "This was a great win for
us."
Cook was hot from the start, hitting all six of her shots in the
first half as Texas took a 38-34 lead into halftime.
She kept it up in the second, hitting scoring eight points in a
16-5 run that put Texas ahead 57-43 with 11:32 to play. The Ducks
never again got the deficit under 12.
Kenya Larkin and Annissa Hastings each scored 11 for Texas.
Oregon got 11 points from Jamie Craighead and 10 from Lindsey Dion.
"We expected a tremendous game and Texas puts a lot of pressure
on you with a lot of athletic talent," Oregon coach Judy Runge
said.
Wolvert said the Ducks were tired after making the long trip
from Oregon.
"I think we ran out of gas early and we just couldn't do
anything about it," Wolvert said.
"I think Texas plays a lot quicker game than us. They play a
different type of game than we're used to.
