Nolan scores 19 in reserve role

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Maybe Deanna Nolan will rediscover the driving layup.

Nolan, in a reserve role for the first time, scored a season-high 19 points and added a career-high seven assists to lead Georgia (No. 7 ESPN/USA Today, AP) to an 85-57 victory Monday night over Georgia Southern.

"She put the ball on the floor and drove to the basket," coach Andy Landers said. "When she does that, she is going to get a few more baskets and a few more assists. She could have and should have done it a few more times."

Landers guessed that as Nolan has developed her shot, she has disdained the drive for the jumper.

"It is easier to spot up and shoot," he said.

Nolan said not starting might have helped her.

"Coming off the bench gives you a chance to get a feel for the game, to see where the gaps are," she said.

Georgia (3-2) shook up its starting lineup after three sluggish starts in four games. Three seniors -- Nolan, Coco Miller and Tiaunna Briggans -- watched at the beginning as Keisha Brown, Camille Murphy and Christi Thomas started. Landers was unimpressed by the new lineup.

"It got people to thinking," he said. "But thinking and doing are two different things. Look at the rebounding. We are going to have to rebound."

Georgia had just two more rebounds than Georgia Southern, 37-35.

Georgia center Tawana McDonald had 10 points, 10 rebounds and blocked a career-high six shots.

Georgia never trailed, but Georgia Southern struggled after the first 10 minutes. With Georgia nursing a 20-17 lead midway through the half, Thomas started a 17-6 run that covered seven minutes with a turnaround jumper in the lane and a put-back. Nolan's jumper in the lane put Georgia up 37-23. Georgia led 41-29 at the half.

Georgia Southern's Sharon Mitchell scored 11 points in the first half and finished with 13.

The Lady Dogs put the game away with an 18-2 run early in the second half with seven points from Nolan.

Georgia also got 12 points from Miller and 10 from Thomas.

"We play teams like this for a reason," said Lady Eagles coach Rusty Cram. "It exposes our weaknesses that we can go back and examine."
