ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- Mississippi State (No. 14 ESPN/USA Today, No. 15 AP) got its first
win of the season Friday night, and for a change it wasn't LaToya
Thomas who led the Bulldogs to victory.
Freshman Jessica Carter scored 14 points as the Bulldogs beat
Cal State Northridge 75-61 at the Southwest Airlines Shootout.
Thomas scored 13 points to extend her streak of double-figure
scoring games to 34. Thomas, slowed by an inner ear infection and
an upper respiratory ailment, was in foul trouble much of the game
and played a career-low 15 minutes.
"That's what I like about my team, they step up when I need
them," Thomas said after the win.
Mississippi State (1-1) outscored the Matadors 15-5 over the
final five minutes of the first half to take a 40-24 lead. Cal
State Northridge (0-2) didn't get closer than 11 points again.
Carter hit four 3-pointers as the Bulldogs went 6-of-11 from
behind the arc.
"It's a positive for the team to play without LaToya,"
Bulldogs coach Sharon Fanning said. LaToya can make a lot of things
happen, but as great as she is, teams are going to key on her. It
was good to get our freshmen some experience."
Kristi Rose led the Matadors with 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Sha'Tasha Allen added 10, all in the second half.
Thomas, who last season became the first freshman to lead the
SEC in scoring, had 48 points in the Bulldogs' season-opening loss
at Memphis on Tuesday.
Keisha Stringfellow scored 13 points for Mississippi State, 11
of them in the first half.
