Welle goes 12-for-12 inside to pace Cyclones

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa State, well known for its 3-point shooting, went inside to beat Iowa.

Angie Welle missed only one shot in scoring 27 points and Tracy Gahan had a career-high 26 as No. 8 Iowa State dominated play near the basket in opening the season with an 86-76 victory over Iowa on Wednesday night.

Iowa State, the last team in the Top 25 to play, was just 2-for-17 on 3-pointers but went 29-for-36 inside the arc. The Cyclones averaged nine 3-pointers a game last season and has made at least one 3 in 159 consecutive games.

"Angie Welle and Tracy Gahan were incredible the whole night," Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly said. "Everybody likes to write that we are a 3-point shooting team. We were a 3-point shooting team tonight, not a making team. But I think it shows we have other options in our offense."

Taller than any of her defenders, the 6-foot-4 Welle was 12-for-13 from the field and grabbed 15 rebounds. Her only miss was a 3-point attempt as the shot clock was winding down.

Gahan, whose previous high had been 14 points, made 10 of 14 shots and had 14 rebounds.

"Obviously there was a real height advantage," Welle said. "Plus our guards were making great passes. Some of them I wasn't even expecting the ball. They just got it in there somehow. And Tracy was just making some great cuts to get open."

Iowa State constantly broke down Iowa's man-to-man defense with drives to the basket or passes to Welle for easy shots. Welle, the preseason player of the year in the Big 12, also beat the Hawkeyes (1-2) down the floor three times for fastbreak layups.

"We got beat too often on dribble-penetration and sent them to the free throw line too many times," Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said. "Something good happened for them off dribble penetration every time. They'd pull up for a jump shot, draw a foul or kick it inside for an easy basket."

Iowa State built a 16-point lead early in the second half and held off a late run by Iowa, which had trouble penetrating Iowa State's zone early, but eventually found some openings.

Freshman Jennie Lillis hit a jumper to pull Iowa to 58-53, and the Hawkeyes trailed 62-57 after Lindsey Meder's 3-pointer with 7:35 to play. Iowa State then went to its inside game to regain control. Welle posted up for two consecutive baskets and Gahan made a layup to stretch the lead to 68-57.

Iowa made one more run, drawing to 68-62 on Randi Peterson's layup with 4:58 left. But Erica Haugen hit a 3-pointer and Gahan followed with a three-point play. That made it 74-62 and Iowa State wrapped it up by sinking 10 of 13 free throws in the final 1:14.

Meder led Iowa with 23 points and Lillis scored 17.

"We always thought that no matter how far behind we were, we could win the game," Iowa's Cara Consuegra said. "I think this showed we had fight and that's going to help us. We'll build on this and we'll be a better team at the end than we are now."

The flurry of inside shots enabled the Cyclones to overcome a poor game by Taylor, a four-year starter who sat out the final 9:25 of the first half after getting her second foul and finished with just eight points.
