MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Tiffany Adkins had 37 points and nine rebounds as Memphis beat Mississippi State (No. 14 ESPN/USA Today, No. 15 AP) 88-82 on Tuesday night.

Adkins connected on 14-of-22 shots from the field to help the Lady Tigers (2-0) overcome a dominating performance by Mississippi State's LaToya Thomas.

Thomas had a school-record 48 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. She was 18-of-31 shots from the field and 10-of-12 from the line for the Lady Bulldogs (0-1).

Mississippi State, which had trailed by as many as 17 in the second half, pulled to 86-82 with 1:15 left on Keisha Stringfellow's short shot. But Adkins hit a pair of free throws with 6.4 seconds left for the final margin.

Memphis led 46-33 at the half behind 19 points by Adkins.

Mississippi State's Thomas scored 23 of the Lady Bulldogs' 33 first-half points, including the first 14. While Thomas was 9-of-16 from the field, the rest of the team was 3-of-18.
