UNC narrowly escapes with win

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- Juana Brown made a 3-pointer from well beyond the arc with 23 seconds left to seal North Carolina's 70-65 victory over California on Thursday night.

After Brown's long 3-pointer made the score 68-62, Cal's Paige Bowie answered by hitting a 3-pointer with 6 seconds left.

The Golden Bears then fouled Nikki Teasley, who made two free throws for the final margin.

The Tar Heels (9-2) led by seven points at halftime and increased the lead to 12 with 5:41 remaining. California (5-5) came back with an 18-9 run, cutting the margin to three, 65-62, on Shavaki Jackson's field goal with 1 minute remaining.

North Carolina's LaQuanda Barksdale, who leads the team and the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring at 21 points heading into the game, led the Tar Heels with 15. Jackie Higgins added 13, and Brown was 3-for-5 from 3-point range and finished with 11 points.

Lauren Ashbaugh had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Cal for the second double-double of her career. Courtney Johnson, the Pac-10 leader in steals, had four.

It was North Carolina's first game after an 11-day layoff for exams and the Christmas holiday. The Tar Heels are 2-1 in three games this season against a Pac-10 opponents.
