STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Helen Darling scored 15 points, and Andrea Garner had a career-high 14 rebounds as Penn State (No. 6 ESPN/USA Today, No. 9 AP) beat Pittsburgh 79-56 Tuesday night.

Maren Walseth added 13 points for the Lady Lions (8-2), and reserves Rashana Barnes and Ashley Luke scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The Lady Panthers (6-3) were led by Amanda Wittenmyer with 12 points, Laine Selwyn and Dallas Williams with 11 and Michele Katkowski with 10.

The Lady Lions built a 39-17 halftime lead while holding the Lady Panthers to 7-of-30 shooting.

In Penn State's season opener last year, Pittsburgh stunned the Lady Lions 49-46 in Pitt's Fitzgerald Field House. A 16-5 run to start the game left no doubt Penn State would not let that happen again.

The fact that Pittsburgh shot 23 percent in the first half also didn't help as Penn State forced 13 turnovers that were converted into 17 points.

The second half was a mere formality as Penn State's Portland used various combinations in preparation for the upcoming Big Ten Conference schedule that begins Dec. 30 against Iowa.

Penn State's biggest second-half lead was 63-27 with 7:19 to play.
