LSU's opens with a 26-9 run

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- Katrina Hibbert and Marie Ferdinand each scored eight points during an opening 26-9 run as Louisiana State (No. 21 ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, No. 13 AP) crushed Southern Methodist, 73-56.

Louisiana State (7-1) extended its winning streak to seven games as Hibbert and Ferdinand totaled 42 points and 12 assists. DeTrina White added 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The Tigers never trailed, racing to a 20-5 lead after a 12-0 run and a 26-9 bulge on Ferdinand's fast-break basket. That matched their biggest lead of the first half.

Karlin Kennedy scored 19 points for SMU (3-4), which closed within nine points twice in the first half but trailed by at least 11 over the final 20 minutes. The Lady Mustangs shot just 33 percent (20-for-61) as D-Dra Rucker was 2-of-18.

Hibbert and April Brown combined for 17 boards as the Tigers were outrebounded, 41-38. They totaled 26 assists and forced 24 turnovers with Ferdinand coming up with six steals.
