Rusty Stanford struggles, falls to 2-2

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) -- Kathy Coyner scored 20 points and added 10 assists as Massachusetts upset Stanford 74-69 Sunday.

Coyner, who also had three steals, hit two free throws with 30 seconds left to put UMass (2-6) ahead for good. Alison MacFarland added two more free throws with eight seconds remaining to ice it as Stanford (No. 23 ESPN/USA Today; No. 22 AP) dropped to 2-2.

UMass's Nekole Smith hit seven of eight shots from the field and finished with 17 points. MacFarland had 11.

Lauren St. Clair scored 18 points to lead Stanford. Carolyn Moos added 13 points and nine rebounds and senior point guard Milena Flores had 11 points and six assists for the Cardinal, which shot 41.4 percent from the field and committed 22 turnovers.
