Riley, Haney overpower Spartans

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Ruth Riley scored 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting, Ericka Haney had 24 and Niele Ivey added 14 points as Notre Dame (No. 8 ESPN/USA Today, No. 7 AP) cruised to an 84-54 victory over previously unbeaten Michigan State on Saturday.

Riley scored seven points in an early 12-4 run that gave Notre Dame a 14-8 lead and the Fighting Irish (5-2) never looked back.

Ivey added 11 assists for Notre Dame (5-2), which rebounded from a 71-61 loss at Purdue. The Irish shot 53 percent (38-of-72) from the filed while holding Michigan State to just 33 percent (20-of-61).

The Spartans (7-1) had only one close call in their first seven games, a 73-72 victory over Alabama on November 20.

Kristen Rasmussen scored 15 points and Maxum Reese 13 for Michigan State, which trailed by as many as 34 late in the second half.

After grabbing a 45-30 halftime lead, Notre Dame put the contest away early in the second half, opening a 62-38 cushion on Danielle Green's jumper with 10:58 remaining.
