Drake spoils Frese's record night

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa State's Stacy Frese couldn't quite do it by herself.

Drake offset Frese's school-record 10 3-pointers with outstanding balance and a strong performance from freshman center Carla Bennett as the Bulldogs beat Iowa State 90-86 on Wednesday night.

Scoring inside and on the perimeter, Drake (3-3) built an eight-point lead with 8½ minutes left, then held on as Iowa State (No. 10 ESPN/USA Today, No. 9 AP) missed some key shots down the stretch. Stephanie Schmitz secured the victory with three free throws in the final minute.

"The thing you saw tonight was a team beat one player," said Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly, whose Cyclones are now 4-2

Bennett consistently got good position inside for easy shots and scored 21 points on 10-of-12 shooting. Schmitz and Haley Sames each scored 18 points, Erin Richards had 11 and Sames grabbed 15 rebounds.

Drake, which lost to Iowa State 78-60 last season, shot 61.3 percent in the second half (19-for-31) and 55.7 percent for the game.

"It was thorough embarrassment last year," Sames said. "I refused to let that happen again. So did the rest of the team. It was sort of revenge."

With Iowa State's defenders playing behind the Drake centers, Bennett and Tammi Blackstone had an easy time getting the ball. All they had to do was turn and shoot -- and the ball almost always went in.

Blackstone, whose aching knees limit her playing time, was in for just seven minutes but made 3-of-4 shots and scored nine points.

"I think they were concentrating on the cutters," Bennett said. "When they did that, that left some open shots for the posts. We took it right to them."

Frese, 10-for-18 on 3-point shots, finished with a career-high 34 points. She shared the previous Iowa State record of eight 3-pointers in a game with Tara Gunderson. Her previous scoring high was 33 points against Northern Iowa last season.

Late in the game, though, Drake kept Frese under control. She made her ninth 3-pointer with 11:51 left and did not make another until 1:52 remained.

"That kid was on fire," Drake coach Lisa Bluder said. "We left her far too many open looks. I think she made five 3-pointers after they got offensive rebounds and kicked it back out to her. Finally we told our players if you are boxing out Frese, do not go for the boards. Stay on her."

Angie Welle scored 14 points for Iowa State, all in the second half, and Desiree Francis added 12, and Tracy Gahan 11. Megan Taylor, averaging 14 points, scored only six on 3-for-11 shooting.

Drake erased a six-point Iowa State lead midway through the second half with the help of five points by Blackstone and a 3-pointer by Kristin Santa. The Bulldogs never trailed after Sames converted a three-point play for a 58-57 lead with 11:32 left.

Richards' two free throws gave Drake a 71-63 lead with 8:27 remaining and Bennett got four baskets in the lane down the stretch to keep the Bulldogs on top.

Schmitz made a free throw with 30.3 seconds left for an 88-84 lead, ran down the loose ball after she missed the second, got fouled and sank two more free throws for a 90-84 lead with 28.6 seconds to play.

"We just couldn't stop them on defense," Welle said. "We kept trading baskets with them for a while. Finally, we weren't trading anymore. They were just scoring and we couldn't score. In a game like this, you can't trade baskets. It's their home court. They're going to win that battle."
