Balanced Lady Vols rout Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Kara Lawson scored 21 points, including 15 in the second half, Tuesday night as No. 2 Tennessee defeated Memphis 92-69.

The Lady Vols (6-1), who led 41-32 at the half, broke the game open with a 25-4 run early in the second half.

Tasheika Morris added 11 points, including 10 during a 3 1/2 minute stretch in the first half, for Tennessee, and Michelle Snow and Tamika Catchings finished with 10 each.

Yolanda Reed led Memphis (3-5) with 21 points, while Patrice Boyd contributed 17. Tiffany Collins scored 13.

The two teams traded leads early in the game, but Tennessee took the lead for good after Morris' 10 straight points midway through the first half.

The Lady Vols would lead by as many as 12 in the first half.

In the second half, Tennessee outscored Memphis 25-4 as Lawson, with the help of Catchings and Snow, outplayed the Lady Tigers.

After Catchings scored the Lady Vols' opening basket of the half, Lawson scored 11 straight points, including three 3-pointers.

Lawson would finish the night hitting 6-of-8 field goals attempts, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range.

While Tennessee was on its run, Memphis was having trouble scoring, going five minutes without a point. The Lady Vols eventually built the lead to 30.

Memphis could get no closer than 16 the rest of the way. Tennessee dominated the boards outrebounding Memphis 52-35 and connected on 53 percent of its shots in the second half.

Neither team did a great job of protecting the ball, committing 24 turnover each.
