Berthieu's 19 points pace Lady Monarchs

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- Lucienne Berthieu had 19 points and had 10 rebounds Saturday as Old Dominion (No. 20 ESPN/USA Today, No. 19 AP) beat Syracuse 71-46 to win the Carrier Classic.

It was the 12th appearance for Syracuse (5-2) in the championship game of the tournament it serves as host and was the fourth loss.

The Lady Monarchs (4-1), who defeated Memphis 99-60 in the first round behind Berthieu's 31 points, jumped ahead early against the Orangewomen and cruised to the victory.

Jaime James gave Syracuse its only lead when she hit a jumper just 18 seconds into the game. A layup by Berthieu, the tournament MVP, started the Lady Monarchs on an 11-2 run and they never trailed again.

Sharron Francis finished with 14 points and Natalie Diaz had 13 for Old Dominion.

Beth Record had 13 points and Shannon Perry added 11 for the Orangewomen, who defeated Northern Iowa 64-63 in the first round.

Francis made two free throws and a 3-pointer and Maiga Hamchetou hit a layup to give Old Dominion an 11-4 lead with 16:40 left in the first half.

Berthieu, who scored 15 points in the second half, gave the Lady Monarchs their biggest lead, 67-39, when she converted two free throws and a layup with 4:49 left.

Leigh Aziz had 11 rebounds for Syracuse.
