ODU crushes Memphis, will play Syracuse in Carrier Classic final

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- Lucienne Berthieu scored a career-high 31 points as Old Dominion (No. 20 ESPN/USA Today, No. 19 AP) beat Memphis 99-60 on Friday in the first round of the Carrier Classic.

Old Dominion (3-1) will play Syracuse in the championship Saturday. The Orangewomen defeated Northern Iowa 64-63 in the other first-round game.

The Lady Monarchs, who were coming off a 109-66 loss to top-ranked Connecticut -- the worst loss in school history -- quickly took control of the game.

Berthieu, who was 11-for-13 from the field, scored nine of her points during a 21-2 run in the first seven minutes. Memphis (3-3) never got closer than 13 points the rest of the game.

Hamchetou Maiga matched her career high with 16 points, Sharron Francis had 11 points and seven assists, and Kim Giddens finished with 10 points for Old Dominion, which outrebounded Memphis 49-29.

Melissa Abraham, Patrice Boyd and Shannon Hamp each scored 10 points to lead Memphis, which made just 1-of-11 shots from 3-point range.
