ATLANTA (AP) -- Ivy Gardner showed why so much is expected of North Carolina State's freshman class.

Gardner, playing only 16 minutes off the bench, scored 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting to lead No. 6 North Carolina State to an 80-70 win over Georgia Tech on Tuesday night.

Gardner, whose previous high was five points Friday against Drake, stepped up with leading scorer Kaayla Chones struggling. Chones, a freshman forward, fouled out with 8:15 to play and finished with only five points in eight minutes.

"We made some substitutions that really worked out," N.C. State coach Kay Yow said. "The bench brought us back. It certainly wasn't a pretty game. It was a struggle for both teams."

Center Summer Erb, last season's Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds but was forced to the bench with 13:23 to play after picking up her fourth foul. She returned at the 5:19 mark after Tech cut a 22-point lead to 65-54 on a 3-pointer by Danielle Donehew.

Even with Erb in the lineup, the Wolfpack (6-0, 1-0 ACC) had their lead cut to eight twice on layups by Amy Lingenfelder and Jamie Kruppa before Terah James' basket put N.C. State up 73-63 with 2:06 to play.

"It was a physical game," Erb said. "We knew it wasn't going to be easy."

Candice McCallum led Tech (3-1, 0-1) with 16 points. Donehew added 15 for the Jackets, who shot only 35.3 percent from the floor.

The Yellow Jackets received a scare in the first half when guard Neisha Butler, last year's ACC Freshman of the Year, left the court with a knee sprain. Butler, who later returned to the bench on crutches, is scheduled for an MRI Wednesday.

"I think it added some incentive," McCallum said. "We told ourselves, 'We can do it.' Neisha's a great player but we knew we still had enough to play a close game."

During a 12-2 run midway through the first half, Tech built a pair of eight-point leads on baskets by Donehew. But after her 3-pointer at the 8:29 mark, the Jackets managed only two field goals before intermission.

The Wolfpack was up 40-32 at halftime as Gardner scored eight uncontested points in a 2:31 stretch.
