Johnson comes through in the clutch for Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Aleah Johnson scored 16 points, including key back-to-back baskets that broke a late tie, lifting No. 23 Texas Tech to a 56-49 victory over No. 14 Louisiana State on Saturday night in the Four in the Fall Classic.

No. 4 UCLA beat No. 8 North Carolina 69-65 in the first game of the women's doubleheader at the new United Spirit Arena.

LSU trailed by as many as eight points in the second half, but rallied to tie the game at 45 on DeTrina White's jump shot with 5:13 left.

Johnson scored inside to break the deadlock, then hit a jumper in the lane after an LSU turnover as the Lady Raiders pulled up by 49-45 with 4:08 to play.

LSU pulled to 51-49 on a jumper by Katrina Hibbert at 2:16, but Texas Tech's Katrisa O'Neal answered with a jumper, and the Lady Raiders were able to hold off the Tigers at the foul line.

Plenette Pierson, who was 6-of-6 from the foul line, made two free throws with 26.8 seconds left, and O'Neal added a free throw with 5.4 seconds left to seal the victory.

Marie Ferdinand led LSU with 17 points. White added 10 points and eight rebounds.

O'Neal backed Johnson with 13 points, and Pierson added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Texas Tech never trailed, holding a 27-21 lead at the half. The Lady Raiders were helped by a 42-31 rebounding edge.
