AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Coach Bill Fennelly told his players that Iowa State (No. 9 ESPN/USA Today, No. 8 AP) owed its fans a good performance against Colorado on Saturday night.

Consider the debt paid in full.

Stacy Frese scored 21 points, including five 3-pointers, in the Cyclones' 82-64 victory over the Buffaloes before 13,215 fans at Hilton Coliseum, the second-largest crowd in Iowa State women's basketball history.

The Cyclones (17-3 overall, 8-1 Big 12) made up for their performance in their last home game, a nail-biting 64-61 victory over Kansas State on Jan. 25, in which Iowa State shot just 33 percent from the field.

"I really thought we had a lot of energy from the beginning, which you like to see," Fennelly said. "It was fun the first half. The second half, we probably subbed a little too liberally at times, but we had the game well in hand."

The victory set up a Tuesday night showdown between Iowa State and Oklahoma for first place in the Big 12. Oklahoma (19-3, 9-0) is a game ahead of the Cyclones in the league standings. The Sooners thumped Nebraska 91-69 Saturday.

The Cyclones trailed Colorado only once, and that was at 3-0 after a 3-pointer by Colorado's Jenny Roulier 10 seconds into the game. ISU then went on a 20-7 run to open a 20-10 lead and never looked back.

The Buffaloes (6-14, 1-8), who lost for the 10th time in their last 11 games, pulled to within five points at 20-15 with 7:51 left in the first half. But the Cyclones put together a 21-2 run that gave them a 41-17 lead with 3:10 remaining before halftime.

ISU shot 58 percent from the field in the first half, including 6-of-12 from 3-point range. Earlier this season, the Cyclones shot 48 percent from the field and 48 percent from 3-point range in an 83-68 victory over the Buffaloes in Colorado.

"I wonder if they shoot the ball this well against everybody else?" said Colorado coach Ceal Barry. "It's obvious our defense isn't very good."

Angie Welle had 15 points and 10 rebounds -- her seventh double-double of the season and fifth in Big 12 play -- while Megan Taylor had 15 points and seven rebounds.

As a team, ISU had a season-high 27 assists.

Mandy Nightingale led Colorado with 13 points while Britt Hartshorn had 12 and Virginia Delepine 10. Roulier, the Buffaloes' leading scorer at 14.3 points per game, was held to just six. She didn't have a field goal in the second half.
