Two arrested in Division I-AA celebration

Associated Press

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Police pelted with coins, bottles and beer cans used Mace on some fans following the NCAA Division I-AA championship game Saturday.

Police were protecting the goal posts at Finley Stadium when fans poured onto the field looking to celebrate Georgia Southern's 59-24 victory over Youngstown State. Fans tore down both goal posts at Georgia Southern following the Eagles' semifinal victory last week.

Police had discouraged fans from tearing down the goal post at the east end of the field when debris was thrown from a balcony. That prompted police to use Mace on some fans, said Lt. Doug Gray of the Chattanooga Police Department.

Fans then turned to the goal post on the west end and quickly pulled it down, and more Mace reportedly was sprayed.

It was not immediately evident how many people were sprayed. Gray said two people were arrested and that three officers suffered minor injuries.
