Thomas will stay to get college degree

Associated Press

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Anthony Thomas, Michigan's leading rusher this season, will return for his senior year rather than enter the NFL draft.

As soon as the Wolverines running back sat down in front of the television lights during Monday's news conference, a smile spread across his face.

"One of the goals I made before I got here is to finish my education," said Thomas, who will graduate next December with a degree in Sports Management and Communications. "That's one thing they can't take away from me."

Thomas was a workhorse for Michigan this season, ranking second in school history with 301 carries. He also ran for 1,297 yards and scored 17 touchdowns.

But while Thomas led the team in rushing, it was the chance to contribute in other ways that added to the 6-foot-2, 225-pound junior's decision to stay.

"I want to come back and be a leader," Thomas said. "A lot of guys were (leaders) to me, and now it's my turn."

Thomas ended the season gaining just 40 yards on 18 carries in Michigan's 35-34 overtime victory over Alabama in the Orange Bowl. Thomas said he spoke with former Michigan players who left early for the NFL, such as Carolina Panthers running back Tshimanga Biakabutuka, and learned how easy it was to be distracted from returning to get his degree.

"I never really gave it a second thought after I talked to my family and friends and saw the opportunities I had here," Thomas said.

Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said that he didn't offer his opinion to Thomas, but rather advised the running back to go with his gut feeling.

"For Anthony, the best thing was to make a decision based on what his goals are," Carr said. "I think he did that."
