Syracuse, Stanford drop from poll

SportsTicker

A Saturday of college football that contained just two minor upsets caused very little change in the latest ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll, released Sunday morning.

Todd Husak
After Todd Husak and Stanford lost, the Pac-10 once again is without a team in the top 25.
The top nine teams in the rankings remained in their places, while Syracuse and Stanford, which were ranked 24th and 25th, respectively, both fell from the poll after suffering narrow conference losses. The Orangemen lost 24-23 at home to Boston College and the Cardinal suffered a 35-30 setback at Washington.

Entering the poll at No. 24 is Arkansas (5-2), which routed Southeastern Conference rival Auburn and is ranked for the first time since Sept. 26. At No. 23, Mississippi (6-2) is among the nation's elite for the third time this season.

After struggling early, top-ranked Florida State (9-0) got past Virginia on Saturday night and received 44 first-place votes and a total of 1,456 from a panel of 59 coaches across the country. Penn State (9-0) received 13 first-place votes and two were given to third-ranked Virginia Tech (7-0).

Penn State is 32 points behind Florida State. The margin was 29 points last week.

Tennessee (6-1) is ranked fourth, followed by Florida (7-1), which recorded the biggest victory of the weekend, a 30-14 beating of Georgia. The Bulldogs (6-2) dropped six places to 16th.

Rounding out the top 10 is sixth-ranked Kansas State (8-0), No. 7 Georgia Tech (6-1), eighth-ranked Mississippi State (7-0), No. 9 Nebraska (7-1) and 10th-ranked Wisconsin (7-2), which is 5-0 since redshirt freshman Brooks Bollinger took over at quarterback.

No. 11 Texas (7-2) and 12th-ranked Marshall (8-0) both moved up one position, while No. 13 Brigham Young (7-1) rose two spots after an important Mountain West Conference victory over Air Force. Alabama (6-2) is 14th and Michigan (6-2) fell one place to No. 15 after struggling past Indiana.

East Carolina (7-1) and Texas A&M (6-2) both held steady at 17th and 18th, respectively, while Big Ten Conference members Michigan State (6-2), ranked 19th, and No. 20 Ohio State (6-3) each are up one place.

Rounding out the poll is No. 21 Purdue (6-3), 22nd-ranked Miami (4-3) and No. 25 Southern Mississippi (5-3).
