Driver charged with DUI after hitting Streck

Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Former University of Kentucky football player Jeremy Streck was in critical condition Saturday after being hit by a man who was charged with driving under the influence.

The 23-year-old Streck was hit at 3:10 a.m. EDT Friday in Columbus and taken to the Ohio State Medical Center. The family asked that no information other than his condition be released.

Police said Paul K. Synadinos, 20, of Gahanna, Ohio, was charged with DUI.

Streck was a starting senior offensive guard on the Kentucky team last season.

The wife of Streck's former high school coach in Cincinnati confirmed that Streck had received serious injuries in the accident.

"We've been told it's very serious," said Crystal Suriano, whose husband, Vince, coached Streck at Anderson High School.

"Jeremy was still friends with several of the players he played with here," Suriano said. "Some of them have gone up to Columbus to see about him. We're all just beside ourselves."

UK football spokesman Tony Neely said Friday night that Kentucky coach Hal Mumme and his coaching staff had been made aware of the accident.

"We're extremely concerned for Jeremy and his family," Neely said. "We'll be watching that situation and will be keeping Jeremy and his family in our thoughts and prayers."

A 6-foot-5, 313-pound lineman from Cincinnati, Streck started 18 games and played in 32 during his Kentucky career. He started all 12 games last season at left guard as the Wildcats went 7-5, making their first appearance in a New Year's Day bowl game since 1952. Streck also made the SEC Academic Honor roll last year.

Redshirted in 1994, Streck played defensive tackle as a redshirt freshman, totaling two tackles, one against Cincinnati and one versus Tennessee.

He moved to offensive line in 1996 and started seven games despite missing three games with a dislocated kneecap.

In 1997, as a junior, Streck alternated with Mike Webster at left guard. Last year, he took over the starting spot at left guard, while Webster moved over to right guard.
