Idle Tennessee passes Penn State

Associated Press

Penn State's close call against unranked Pittsburgh cost the Nittany Lions the No. 2 ranking, while Florida State remained No. 1 with a close call against Georgia Tech.

The Seminoles (2-0) held the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press' Top 25 college football poll with a 41-35 win over the Yellow Jackets. But idle Tennessee (1-0), the defending national champions, returned to No. 2 as the Nittany Lions fell after a 20-17 win over the Panthers.

Taking a bigger tumble was Notre Dame (1-2), which fell eight spots to No. 24 following a 28-23 loss at Purdue (2-0). The Boilermakers moved up six places to No. 14.

Rounding out the Top 10, Florida and Nebraska were tied for No. 4, followed by No. 6 Michigan, No. 7 Texas A&M. No. 8 Miami, No. 9 Wisconsin and No. 10 Virginia Tech.

In Sunday's balloting by the 70 sports writers and broadcaster on the AP panel, Florida State received 49 first-place votes and 1,725 points -- 18 more first-place votes than last week.

The Vols were second with 13 first-place votes and 1,650 points; the Nittany Lions (3-0) had six first-place votes and 1,619 points. Last week, Penn State had 26 first-place votes.

Florida (2-0), a 58-27 winner over Central Florida, had one first-place vote, as did Virginia Tech (2-0), which beat Alabama-Birmingham 31-10. Florida and Nebraska, a 45-0 winner over California, both totaled 1,446 points.

There should be another shakeup after next week's games, which feature Penn State at Miami, Tennessee at Florida and North Carolina State, No. 20 this week, at Florida State.

Georgia was No. 11, followed by Georgia Tech, Ohio State, Purdue, Arkansas, Kansas State, Southern California, Alabama, Arizona, NC State, UCLA, Arizona State, Colorado State, Notre Dame and BYU.

In the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll, the top five are: Florida State, Tennessee, Penn State, Florida and Michigan.
