Sooner or later, Oklahoma is vulnerable

Why is it that you don't think the Oklahoma Sooners should be the No. 1 team in the nation? Do you just not think they could compete with a Florida St. or Miami? I think they've proven who the No. 1 team in the nation is in my book.
Justin Fowler, Norman, Okla.

 Josh Heupel
Josh Heupel threw one TD pass as OU remained the nation's lone unbeaten team.

I don't think they could beat Miami or Florida State on a neutral field. I've seen Oklahoma play three times, FSU twice and Miami twice. I've watched them play with my own eyes and that's my opinion.

Mr. Corso, the only thing I want to know is who will get your vote for the Heisman. I'm thinking the "old man?"
Matt Morton, Chillicothe, Ohio

Chris Weinke won the Heisman with his performance in the second half against Miami. He hit 19 passes for 299 yards and three TDs at Miami to bring FSU back. It was the Noles' defense that lost the game by three points, not Weinke. Plus, he's got the best numbers of anyone in the country. Chris Weinke deserves the Heisman trophy.

What are my chances of selling all four of my Citrus Bowl tickets if Auburn doesn't go?
Nick Wade, Auburn, Ala.

Forget about it. Sell 'em if you got em, because Tennessee's going to the Citrus Bowl.

Does Auburn stand a chance against FLA in SEC?
John Folmar, Fort Worth, Texas

Absolutely. The reason? They can run the football.

Can you honestly say that the Washington Huskies should be ranked behind a team they beat, Miami, when the strength of schedule clearly shows Washington's road was tougher? Will the West ever be respected over the East?
Steve Fullerton, Seattle

I never said Washington should be ranked behind Miami. I only ranked the teams I've seen play, and I think Miami is a good football team, and Florida State is better than Oklahoma. Washington might be better than all of them, but they've been hurt by winning five games in fourth quarter rallies. The computer doesn't think they're any good because they only win close games. It's not me ... talk to the computer.

Editor's Note
Lee Corso and the rest of the Gameday crew can't get to every campus this season, so ESPN.com has given fans another option: It's called "Lee-mail." Lee has an opinion on just about anything related to college football. So, go ahead and ask him a question. He'll give his thoughts on the subject.

Why won't Oregon St. get to go to a BCS bowl? They are a much better team than Notre Dame and they deserve to go.
Danielle, Dallas

I don't know that they are a much better team than Notre Dame, but Oregon State could probably beat the Irish if they played them. But, the system is set up so that if Notre Dame meets certain criteria, whatever that is, they have an opportunity to go to a BCS bowl. Notre Dame is Notre Dame and Oregon State is Oregon State; there's no comparison when it comes to public perception of classic college football. That's why. People who watch TV would rather watch Notre Dame.

What bowl do you think the Gators will make it to, and who do you think they will play?
Heath Phillips, Haines City, Fla.

Sugar Bowl, probably to face Notre Dame.

I think Michigan is one of the best teams in the country. I don't think they deserve a high ranking because of their very young defense, and a "conservative once we're ahead" game plan. Next year they lose Thomas and the offensive line ine (that's pretty much it), and they are predicted to have the best recruiting class in decades. Do you agree with me when I say that they will win the 2002 national championship?
aMaize n Blue, Grand Rapids, Mich.

No. It's ludicrous to be picking the 2002 national championship right now. 2001, maybe, but not 2002.

YO!

How good is Oregon State? Their defensive backs had a field day with Harrington and Oregon's offense. I sure would like to see them play a team like Florida State, Miami, or Oklahoma. How do you think they would fare against the above mentioned teams?
Michale Dickerson, Coos Bay, Ore.

Oregon State is very, very, very good team offensively and probably good enough to beat anybody in the country, particularly if the game is played in Corvallis.

Does Nebraska stand a chance at all to going to the Orange Bowl? Also next year NU has Oklahoma, K-State, and Notre Dame home. Will they be a powerhouse next year?
Tyler LaFollette, Syracuse, Neb.

Forget about it -- they aren't going anywhere near the Orange Bowl this year. The Huskers always have a chance to be a powerhouse. They need to quickly, develop some kind of passing attack on third and long situations. Not having that has killed them this year.

What was your take on the Clemson/South Carolina matchup? USC is one of the least penalized teams, but yet it seems that is what made the difference in this game.
Joe Kowalewski Jr, Columbia, S.C.

The difference in the game was the South Carolina defensive backs letting a guy behind them with 16 seconds to go in the game. Then Clemson kicked the field goal. If the DBs would have knocked the pass down, the Gamecocks could have had seven million yards in penalties and still won.

Northwestern (with only 7,500 undergrads) will never have the image of the more "prime time" Big Ten schools like Michigan and Ohio State. If the Big Ten bowls (other than Rose Bowl) continue to pick teams subjectively, Northwestern will only be able to play in lesser bowls in tight years like this one. To be fair, do you think the objective selection process of the Rose Bowl should apply to the other Big Ten bowls as well?
Mike Ho, Chicago

You just answered your own question: "To be fair...." Well, life is not fair. Forget about it.

When Iowa State was unbeaten early in the season you made the comment that they would have to run the table before you would take them seriously. They didn't run the table, but they did win eight games. Does their performance against Texas A&M and Kansas State still lead you to classify them as lower echelon in the Big 12, or would you agree that there has been noteworthy improvement in Ames?
Eric Burrough, North Liberty, Iowa

There has been wonderful improvement in Ames, so you can now put Iowa State in the middle of the Big 12.

How will Maryland fare next season without LaMont Jordan?
Chris Foster, Seat Pleasant, Md.

They need to get a quarterback, then they need to get some defense, then they can worry about LaMont Jordan.
