Sooners need offense, Spartans need consistency

By Lee Corso
Special to ESPN.com

Everyone is talking about Oklahoma's defense and how it will take them to Fiesta Bowl, but no one is discussing the offense. Do you think the offense has improved with Jason White back and new running game coordinator or will they still rely heavily on their defense to produce the magic?
Vikas, Rolla, Mo.

They'll rely on their defense to win most games because their offense is still suspect. They plan on running the ball more and maybe throwing more deep passes, but the Oklahoma offense hasn't proven it can outscore people. Although with their defense they may not have to. I picked Texas in that division because of offensive balance and a good defense, while Oklahoma has a great defense but an offense that is their Achilles' heel.

Editor's Note
Lee Corso and the rest of the Gameday crew can't get to every campus this season, so ESPN.com has given fans another option: It's called "Lee-Mail." Lee has an opinion on just about anything related to college football. So, go ahead and send him a question. He'll answer questions each Wednesday during the season in "Lee-Mail."

Do you think that Jammal Lord has athletic and leadership abilities to keep Nebraska in the elite of college football?
Jeremy Young, Omaha, Neb.

Jammal Lord is not the problem for Nebraska. I think the Cornhuskers lack the all-around skill on both sides of the ball to be a national contender. They will be a very good team, but their skill people on both offense and defense have a lot of work to do to make this a great team.

Seeing Iowa State give Florida State all it can handle, how do you see their chances in the Big 12?
Jay Longnecker, Ankeny, Iowa

The Cyclones have a very good chance in the Big 12. If you remember, I said on GameDay that Seneca Wallace would give Florida State fits. Iowa State played a close game against a good team and I've moved Wallace into my top five for the Heisman. He's a great player, and the more he plays the better he gets. The guy is sensational.

Everyone in the country is calling Michigan State this year's surprise team. I know they return a lot of starters, but this team has underachieved in the past. They do have an experienced defense, but they didn't play well last year and on offense they lost T.J. Duckett. Has this team been overrated?
Nathan Jessen, Kearny, Neb.

The reason most people are looking at Michigan State as a top team is because of the schedule. They have eight home games and all their tough games besides the Michigan game are in East Lansing. The Spartans have also played very well recently against good teams. They're a good team, but they've beaten Michigan before and turned around and lost to Indiana, so they have to be more consistent to prove something to me.

This may not be the most likely scenario, but looking at their schedules I see it at least as a possibility. Let's say Ohio State and Michigan State -- who don't play each other this season -- both go undefeated in the regular season. Can you envision any scenario where two Big Ten schools meet in the Fiesta Bowl for the BCS title?
Scott King, Minneapolis, Minn.

No way! Forget about it. There are too many other good teams in the other major conferences. In a case like that I think the highest-rated team of the two would go to the Fiesta Bowl but not both. That's not likely to happen at all, but I think it would be more likely to happen in the Big 12.

What was your assessment of Fresno State's team coming off the game against Wisconsin? What do you see in the next few games against Oregon, Oregon State, and Colorado State? Can we count on some close games or perhaps a win or two in any of these matchups?
Pedro Lozano, Oxnard, Calif.

Absolutely! I was very impressed by Fresno State. They're very well-coached. And don't forget, that game was at Wisconsin and Wisconsin had revenge on its mind after last year's loss to Fresno. Bernard Berrian was hurt in the first quarter and in my opinion that was the difference. I would not be surprised if they had beaten Wisconsin with him in the lineup. He's a good player, Fresno State is a fine football team and I have a lot of respect for them.

Now that the College Football Season is finally here, how do you cope and keep your skills sharp during the offseason?
Mike Gruhala, Kansas City, Kan.

Well, I was in coaching for a lot of years and I have a lot of friends I call to find out what's going on in the different conferences. I also have a lot of friends in the newspaper business who are covering games and I'm constantly studying the national magazines. We also have two great researchers here, Brad Edwards and Chris Fallica, who in my opinion are the best researchers in all of football. I rely heavily on them.

What are your thoughts on Kansas State's chances for winning the Big 12 North? With their schedule they have a very good chance.
Michael O'Neill, Manhattan, Kan.

They sure do. My partner Kirk Herbstreit has already picked them to win the North. I don't agree, but they are a good team with a good schedule. They've got USC at home after three easy home games and they also get Texas and Nebraska at home. The key game for them at at Colorado, and I've picked Colorado in that game. But Kansas State is a good team and will be better than their 6-6 record last year.

Coach, why are the Florida Gators not being mentioned when it comes to the SEC championship, much less the national championship? Is it because of a new coach needing to prove himself or are the Gators just short on talent. I know the schedule is brutal but they have some great players returning this year, like Rex Grossman.
Tony Hale, Spring Hill, Fla.

I think it's a little bit of both. The main reason they're not rated higher is because people are interested to see how they react without Steve Spurrier on the sideline. And they lost some great receivers to the NFL. Losing that kind of talent, along with their schedule and a rebuilt offensive line are the reasons people aren't talking about them as much.

How is USC shaping up to be this year? It seems they have a chance to be very strong considering they return most of their key components from offense and defense. Are they good enough to overcome their killer schedule and possibly run the table?
Tommy, Piedmont, Calif.

I don't know if they can overcome that schedule. They have Auburn, Colorado, Kansas State, Oregon State and Washington State, and that's just the first five games. There's no team in the nation that could go through those games undefeated or without at least some problems. The Trojans are a good team, though, and I see a mid-level bowl for them.
