SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ Running back Charles Roberts rushed for 409 yards and five touchdowns to lead Sacramento State past Idaho State 41-20 on Saturday, setting a new NCAA record for a single-game rushing performance.

The score seesawed and the teams tied at 10 at the half before Roberts rushed for a 69-yard touchdown to give Sacramento State (5-5, 3-5 Big Sky Conference) a 17-10 edge.

The Hornets went up 31-13 in the fourth before Idaho State (2-8, 0-7) cut the deficit to 31-20 on a 1-yard touchdown by Nick Whitworth.

But Roberts scored a 59-yard touchdown seconds later, and Scott Brown completed scoring with a 42-yard field goal.

Roberts eclipsed the previous NCAA Division I-A record set by Kansas running back Tony Sands, who rushed for 396 yards against Missouri in 1991; the Division I-AA record of Siena running back Reggie Greene, who gained 379 yards against St. John's in 1996; and the Division II record of Fairmont State running back Rob Davidson, who rushed for 403 yards versus Concord last year.

Roberts said he was inspired by Walter Payton, the leading rusher in NFL history who died Monday of bile duct cancer at the age of 45.

``I wanted to try and come out and run hard like he ran,'' Roberts said.
