Gilmore's record day leads Missouri past Red Raiders

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- Zain Gilmore ran for 165 yards and three touchdowns on a school-record 45 carries and Missouri almost completely shut down Texas Tech's offense in a 34-7 Big 12 Conference victory Saturday.

Gilmore, a sophomore celebrating his 20th birthday, had been sharing tailback duty with senior DeVaughn Black. He took over on a full-time basis after Black's third fumble in three games and Kevin Curtis' 86-yard return with 9:37 to go in the first quarter and scored on runs of 1, 8 and 1 yards.

Gilmore carried 17 times for 58 yards on Missouri's final drive, which lasted 19 plays and ate up 10:23 before he scored from a yard out with 1:49 left. The previous school record for carries was 42 by Darrell Wallace in 1985 against Kansas State.

Jim Dougherty passed for 216 yards as Missouri (4-4, 1-4 Big 12) shrugged off two costly early fumbles and ended a three-game losing streak. The Tigers had totaled seven points in the previous six quarters.

Texas Tech (4-4, 3-2) was three plays and out nine of its first 10 possessions and also committed two key turnovers in the first half. The Red Raiders, who scored 66 points the previous two weeks, had 169 yards and scored only on an 86-yard fumble recovery by Curtis.

Missouri, shut out last week at Kansas, got rolling with two field goals by Brad Hammerich. A fumble by kick returner John Norman at the 2 set up Gilmore's 1-yard run for the go-ahead touchdown and Dougherty had a 2-yard run in the second quarter for his first career touchdown.

Missouri, which led 20-7 at the half, stopped Texas Tech's only drive of the half when Pat Duffy intercepted a pass batted into the air by Cedric Hardin at the Tigers 4 with four seconds to go.

At one point in the first half, Missouri had a 211-6 advantage in yardage. Texas Tech had a mere 3 yards rushing in the half.

Texas Tech's Rob Peters was 13-for-32 for 160 yards with two interceptions. Missouri's Julian Jones got his Big 12-leading sixth interception in the fourth quarter.
