COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Spencer Romine passed for a career-high 404 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner to Scottie Montgomery with 1:42 left, as Duke rallied to upset Maryland 25-22 Saturday.

Duke (2-6, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) trailed 22-17 before Romine guided the Blue Devils on a 70-yard, 12-play drive. Facing fourth-and-goal from the 14, Romine hit Montgomery over the middle for the decisive score.

An interception by Ryan Stallmeyer with 56 seconds clinched the Blue Devils' third victory in 14 games at Maryland since 1960.

LaMont Jordan ran for a career-high 227 yards for the Terrapins (5-3, 2-3), trying to clinch their first winning season since 1990. Maryland, which was also attempting to qualify for a bowl bid, had won four straight and 22 of 25 against the Blue Devils.

Romine completed 27 of 42 passes, including eight to Richmond Flowers for 173 yards. It was a typical thriller for Duke, which has been involved in five games decided by a touchdown or less.

Jordan, who had 165 yards rushing in the first half, became the fourth Maryland player to run for 1,000 yards in a season. The junior has 1,082 yards with three games left, and his 227-yard effort on 24 carries was the third-best in the history of the school.

A 59-yard punt pinned the Blue Devils on their 4 early in the second half, and Maryland got a safety and a 19-14 lead when Romine was called for intentional grounding in the end zone.

The Terrapins then fumbled away the free kick, and Sims Lenhardt kicked a 32-yard field goal to bring Duke to 19-17. Late in the quarter, however, Lenhardt missed a chance to put the Blue Devils ahead when his 43-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Kris Jenkins.

Maryland made it 22-17 with 8:46 remaining when Brian Kopka kicked a 28-yard field goal to end a 13-play drive that featured two key penalties. A 61-yard run by Jordan was brought back because of holding, but the Terrapins got a break when Duke was called for a personal foul after quarterback Calvin McCall came up well short on a third-down run.

It stayed 22-17 until Romine began the key drive with 4:47 left.

Maryland led 17-14 at halftime after amassing 248 yards rushing and holding Duke to negative yardage on the ground. But Romine passed for 223 yards and two touchdowns, both to Flowers.

Duke trailed 3-0 before Flowers caught a pass near the left sideline and sprinted the final 35 yards for a 69-yard score. Lenhardt kicked the conversion to become Duke's career scoring leader with 235 points.

Maryland led 17-7 before Romine went 5-for-6 on an 80-yard drive that concluded with a 19-yard pass to Flowers, whose second touchdown matched his total over the Blue Devils' previous seven games.
