PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Brown, powered by James Perry's four touchdown passes, built a 27-3 halftime lead and then held off a second-half Rhode Island rally for a 27-25 victory Saturday in the 84th annual Governor's Cup.

The four touchdown passes, gave Perry the Ivy League record in career TD passes with 61, three more than previous record-holder Jay Fielder of Dartmouth. The senior hit on 28 of 50 passes for 299 yards in also becoming the Ivy League career leader in completions with 634. However, he also threw four interceptions, two of which aided Rhode Island's second-half comeback against hosting Brown (4-1).

The loss for Rhode Island (0-6) capped a day of bad news for its 101-year-old football program. The Providence Journal reported in its Saturday editions that university officials have begun discussions about dropping the program to save money. Rhode Island has lost nine straight dating back to last year and has won just three of its last 22.

Ram backup quarterback Vince Nedimyer took over for starter Ken Mastrole late in the third quarter and led the Rams to three touchdowns and to the brink of tying the game. Nedimyer's 16-yard touchdown pass to Matt Birkett with 58 seconds remaining pulled the Rams within two points.

Rhode Island went for a two-point conversion to tie the game, but a wide-open Moses Tajong dropped Nedimyer's pass in the end zone.
