^ PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) _ Quarterback Jimmy Blanchard passed for four touchdowns and totaled 348 yards, his second-best effort ever, as Portland State built a 28-3 halftime margin and the Vikings defeated Montana State 49-28 Saturday in Big Sky action.

Blanchard, the junior from Grants Pass, was 21 of 30 as the Vikings (5-2 overall, 4-1 Big Sky) rolled up 550 total yards.

Sophomore quarterback Dusty Broderick led the Bobcats (3-3, 1-2) by passing for 262 yards on 26 of 44. He threw one touchdown pass and ran for another.

``The way they play they're difficult to play against. I think we did a good job of bending but not breaking, PSU coach Tim Walsh said of his team's defensive effort.

``Offensively we came out and did pretty much what everyone wanted to do. We needed to come out and win this game and not just win it but win it convincingly.

``It's fun to play in front of big crowds at home. Fortunately we've had our big games at home and we've won them, said PSU quarterback Jimmy Blanchard.

Vikings tailback Charles Dunn scored three touchdowns on runs of 13, 46 and 2 yards and collected 185 yards, his fourth 100 yard-plus game this season and his 18th of his career.

Blanchard engineered four scoring drives in the first half as the Vikings totaled 282 yards, His 11-yard toss to Steve Jakubowski opened scoring in the first quarter to give Portland State a 7-0 lead.

Dunn closed out a 75-yard drive with a 13-yard run at the beginning of the second quarter and his 46-yard run gave the Vikings a 21-3 margin with 7:21 left in the half.

Terry Charles grabbed a seven-yard toss from Blanchard to close out the first half scoring with 22 seconds left. Charles caught eight passes for 180- yards but it was his 28-yard grab in the 84-yard drive that set up the final score of the first half.
