AKRON, Ohio (AP) _ Brandon Payne scored three touchdowns and rushed for 94 yards on 18 carries as Akron beat Ohio 41-28 Saturday.

Payne scored twice in the first quarter as the Zips (4-2, 3-1 Mid-American Conference) built a 28-0 lead in the first half, then held off a late rally as the Bobcats (2-4, 2-1) scored 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Raynald Ray scored twice for Ohio in the final quarter on an 8-yard run and a 29-yard pass from Dontrell Jackson.

James Washington was 9-of-13 for 160 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for Akron.

Washington combined with Jake Schifino for a 75-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Schifino had three catches for 90 yards.

Jackson was 11-of-21 for 139 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed 14 times for 55 yards and a score.

Ray rushed for 48 yards on seven carries, and had five receptions for 99 yards. Chad Brinker rushed for 78 yards on 19 carries for Ohio.

The Bobcats had six turnovers. Akron's Derek Wilborn recovered two fumbles, while Dwight Smith returned an interception 32 yards in the third quarter for the Zips' final touchdown.
